Best Drum Sander for under 1K

Post by George » Sun Feb 24, 2013 11:08 am

Who has a drum sander that they love and would recommend? Hoping to spend less than a grand but I'm the kind of guy who likes good quality tools that will do the job and out live me. So, what's the best bang for the buck out there for guitar builders?

Thanks, George

I found a used Performax 16-32 on Craigslist, it was in excellent shape and has worked well for me. I forget the price but it was under $700.

We have two units which are really Performax designs, they both have changed ownership -- a Dual drum 37" Super Max and a Jet 10-20. Both very nice machines -- I would say the prime objective is to get the most "horse power" you can afford and operationally spend the extra money and use Blue Zirconia abrasive.

Ken, on that linked page there is also shown a belt cleaning stick - will that remove the resins and such that hardwoods leave on the sanding belt?

Nope! --- You need to try one of these

or the liquid cleaner made for wide belts -- very messy but works well.

The grizzly 10/20. reviewed on this page. I ve used it twice one back and one top. It works good. And it is around 400 bucks.

I was able to pick up a new Jet 16-32 with stand for $950 at Rockler in Houston yesterday (15% off their list of $1119). Woodcraft on the north side of town says they have a Jet promotion starting on Wednesday, good for 15% off. I think their price was $1199, so their discounted price would be about $1020. There is also a guy on Houston Craigslist that has the earlier Performax 16-32 with stand listed for $800. Hope this helps someone looking for this sander.
