Advice on a finish for pine stairs

Post by Dave Bagwill » Sat Apr 03, 2021 3:39 pm

We have a staircase with nice unfinished pine stairs that we removed the old carpet from yesterday. We don't use them often, but would like to put on a good quality low-gloss, satin, finish. Here are a couple of pix - we removed all the staples, the carpet and the pad, but I still need to scrape and sand the little pad remains.

Any suggestions or experiences you can share?

I use Osmo 3054 Hard Wax oil. It is just applied with a rag and can be restored without removing. https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/OS-PX.XX. I am on about 13 year with our main stairs up and down. I reapply every few years. The stairs look great. Not a high gloss finish and leave the wood looking like wood.

Measuring the stairs and landings I come up with 125 sq ft. The suggested coverage for the .66 gallon is 250 sq ft, and they suggest two coats, so it pencils out just fine.
Enough tru-oil to do the job would cost me about the same, I think.
