Pore filling a la Robbie O'Brien

Post by Dave Bagwill » Tue Feb 21, 2012 4:18 pm

Robbie is very fond of the pore filling with shellac and sawdust.
He is careful to insist on end-grain sawdust; put some on the area to be filled, then using a cotton ball dipped in 1 lb shellac, rub the dust into the pores.
Has anyone here tried this or will I be the first?

Shellac "makes me sad"

Except for full French polish -- I don't use the stuff, over the years problems with it not drying properly and unexpected and unwanted off value tinting, shading and coloration -- I gave up.

Dave, I haven't gotten to that part of the video series yet but what does he mean by "end grain sawdust" and how is this different that the tru-oil slurry sanding (if any)?

Tim - I'm about to try this using TO instead of shellac to avoid any difficulties.

He uses the dust formed by sanding against the grain on the end of a piece of scrap that matches the back and sides. He does not sand the back or sides to create a slurry.
