Hey Guys.I am new to the board and I'm guessing I may be on here allot..!!
Question - In this picture, what are the construction layers for a soundport like this? It doesn't look like layers of veneer. Is this contructed before its installed in the guitar or shaped in it?
Any thoughts would be awesome..THANKS

The way I have made them and the way I have seen them made is that a reinforcement patch about the thickness of the sides is installed in the sound hole location before the guitar is closed. I have mostly seen the sound port routed after the guitar is closed. I do it after I bind the guitar to avoid a hole where my binding machine indexes the rims. The binding and purflings on the inside of the sound port are added after the hole is routed. You can see the joint to close the binding in the first picture offset slightly from the center of the back side.

I make a cross grain veneer patch of different colors, it adds strength to the soundport and enhances the look of the edge. As long as it is structurally sound, it's all really what is most pleasing to your eye.

This everett guitar is more what i am interested in. The second layer underneath the sound hole. This could be done on the top sound hole i guess. Is this made oversized and glued to the side like the veneers? and them shaped?
Thanks fellas
