Acoustic Guitar Construction

"Terz" as to basic body shape; the lower bout is only 14". Twelve frets to the body, long scale.

Going to try a couple of new things on this one, to be revealed later. So I know they work :-)

Spent a day or two re-forming a couple of molds, one for construction purposes and one for side-bending purposes.
I will be using thick walnut veneers, and laminating them with TB original, clamping them into the mold using the cauls and clamps that Bogdanovich advises.
To that end I purchased a 4x8x1/8 piece of tempered hardboard at HD, $12.98 and cut part of it into 32"x4.5" strips.
Then I thinned the strips on the drum sander - from 1/8" down to .090" or thereabouts.
Then I bent them on a pipe (190*) to get pretty good fit - it doesn't have to be perfect, as the material is pretty thin and the clamps will pull it to the form.
I've got 4 of those strips bent and clamped into the molds overnight.

Looks like a fun project. are you using the tall mold to laminate the sides or the construction mold I see with the clamps?

I'll be using the tall molds for bending/laminating the sides - doing two at once.

I'll also be bending/laminating the linings using the shorter molds.

I cut up a maple board into 16 strips - 4 each for 4 linings - the board was a 3/4"x2" x6' from HD - enough wood for 3-4 guitar's worth of linings and bindings. The thinnest my benchtop bandsaw would cut was .090", so I will use the drum sander to get them down to .045", which x4 will = .180" linings.
Some of the strips are on the cabinet to the left of the saw.
Later today - probably tomorrow actually - I will glue the strips together in a mold, then round the bottom edge with a 1/4" roundover bit in the router.

I went ahead and built the lining mold per Bogdanovich's book. The last pic shows the almost completed mold - it needs a bit of cleaning up - but the cork is installed and everything fits well.

That looks pretty cool. Are you able to just press in the laminates or do you need to pre-bend them

Just pull the 4 pieces as a unit into the mold, and clamp away. I'll post a couple more pix a bit later today.
