Shooter sander

Post by Dave Bagwill » Mon Dec 21, 2015 6:53 pm

Got an early xmas present - not a necessary item perhaps, but I just got done using it to joint that torrefied Sitka top, and the sander jointer got me to perfect in very short order. I used 220, I could go up to 600 - would that be any better?

I'm a bit thick inna head. Is the 'shooter sander' the black thingie with the knob on top, or the thingie and the table? And who made it, and what's it called so we who don't have one yet can look it up?

Nice looking tool.

It is the plane like device in the top picture. Looks like a veritas shooting sander http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/Page.a ... at=1,42500

Looks like a fun early gift!

I should add this: yes the tool comes with strips of adhesive backed sandpaper. But:

1. it's a lot cheaper to cut your own sandpaper strips, and glue them to the tool using the masking tape trick.
2. If you want to use the strips veritas provides, I suggest putting masking tape on the tool, and adhering the strip to the masking tape. Reason is, gettting that strip off when applied in the suggested manner, is a real pita.

But it works great.

$339.00!! Oh wait - that's for the shooting plane. This device is $30 or $45 depending on whether you want the 8 incher or the 16", which is the one Santa brought early.
It is a Solid tool, very clean and balanced.
Yes, a zillion boards have been jointed with just a straight stick and some sandpaper. But I'm not looking this gift horse in the mouth :-) I likes it.
