Fretboard Copy Jig Easy Clamp idea.

I have made a couple of fret slot cutting jigs for different instruments based on the design in the Brian Forbes book. I had an idea for a simple way to clamp the fretboard in place on my duplicating jig while sawing fret slots. It's probably not original, but my approach might be of interest.

I used two 4" Bessey Clamps. These can be found for under $4 ea. on occasion at Home Depot. It's a simple matter to grind off the dimples on the bars and separate the clamp screw arm from the rest. I also used a couple of 3-1/2" pieces of 1/4-20 allthread rod, two 1/4-20 wingnuts and a couple of 1/2" spacers. Mine are metal (because I had a bin full of them in my metalworking stuff) but wood or plastic would work as well. I cut a couple of pieces of hardwood as shown and drilled 3/16" holes for the threaded rod. It's easy to clamp onto the threaded rod with Vise-Grips and screw it into the hardwood blocks until flush with the bottom. The threaded rod will cut it's own way into the wood blocks. The wood blocks with the threaded rods are glued to the side of the jig as shown.

The slot in the Bessey clamp is a bit too small to fit over the threaded rod, so I drilled them out in the center of the slot using a 1/4" drill bit. I cut the clamp handles off just above the cove behind the metal ferrule. This is to help avoid overclamping, which could bend the threaded rod or split out the wood blocks they are mounted in. Finger tight is plenty good enough.

This design allows the clamps to swing out of the way when advancing the fretboard blank to cut the next slot.

Toggle clamps? About $4 - $6 each I am thinking screwing those up and down and guarding against rotation misalignment 20 times each might get old. But in my view clamps of some kind are a necessity, I've seen home-brew fixtures without that feature and I believe its a mistake.

The spacers raise the clamp up high enough to clear the sides of the jig. The clamps have Acme threads, so only a couple of turns is enough to release the fretboard. Sure, toggle clamps would be faster for a production shop where time is at a premium, but I have a couple of dozen of the 4" Bessey clamps and could spare two for this project without the bother & expense of tracking down & ordering toggle clamps of the correct size. I was inspired to create these type of clamps based on the design of the LMI fret sawing jig. They use a pair of thumbscrew clamps - one mounted above the channel on each side of the saw slot.

Good show Jim, is it wide enough to use with one of the LMI or Stewmac indexing jigs?

We offer templates as well -- actually includes a real nice pro level fixture plan.

The channel is just a hair over 3" wide. I 'm going to be using an LMI fretboard as a template. The LMI board is attached to the blank with 2-sided tape and the fret slots facing 'down' Stanley utility knife blades are exactly 0.023" thick, so I removed the cutting edge from one and mounted it in the bottom of the slot to use as an indexing stop.
