Finger-board side dot markers

Post by ken cierp » Fri Jan 06, 2012 12:20 pm

If you plan to build a few guitars this is a good fixture to consider. Getting the dot markers centered and in alignment in at all locations can be a challenge. You really need a drill press to make the fixture, however it can be used with a hand drill once built. After each use I drizzle CA into the pilots to make sure they do not get over-size of out of round. Of course you need one of these for each scale length.

Ken,

I can't see the pictures while I am at work so I need to ask: Do you install the dots after the fretbord has been shaped, fretted, and is pretty much ready for finish? I have read of guys installing the dots and once they final shaped the fretboard, the dots were off center. This could still be a problem on a pre-radiused board if the builder gets a bit overzealous with their neck shaping and sands into the bottom edge of the fretboard.
Thanks,

Tony

The board is completely "shaped" except for the tiny 30 degree bevel I sand on the edge during the fret dressing process.

Great idea! Thats always been one of my sticky points after all the work we do. I can never get em right!
So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.
