Dremel

Post by rusty999 » Fri May 17, 2013 7:47 pm

Any Dremel users on the forum ? I was wondering what your thoughts are on a cordless model dremel or are they as powerful as the plug in type? I have the option of buying a cheap cordless and having never owned or used one i have no idea what to look for in a dremel. I did buy the stew mac precision router base some time ago so it needs to fit that for doing my rosette.
Any favorite models used by Luthiers ? Will other makes do the same job ? I have seen one called FERM here in Europe ,and that looks interesting and also a lot cheaper but i'm wondering if the thread screw at the bottom will fit my Router base.
Any help appreciated

I had a cordless dremel a while back. It wasn't good for much. Just not a very powerful tool.

Thanks for reply, I kinda guessed that it would be case. I think I will go with something a bit more powerfull that would last longer.

We have both Dremels battery and corded -- while handy for fine, quick clean up, inlay (OK for rosette channels see plans in the special tools section) I believe they are way under powered for binding channels.

I agree wth Ken, I still use a corded Dremel for all my little routing work. For inlay and rosettes it is just great. Still using it for binding, but it is not that well for the job.
My friend has a Ferm, but the bearings are crap. Sounding louder than the bit does.

Got to get me a laminate trimmer soon.
