I'm going to try this idea out, unless someone has negative feedback or more information.
Ken - any improvements to add?

Thanks
Dave

Not really -- I have not got around to wiring up the controller box -- which is a three gang set-up with outlet - timer - dimmer. This thing gets as hot as an electric frying pan, has to be made safe for unattended use.

Looks like a really good idea to me. You get the thermal mass of the pipe, a rather consistent and dispersed heating source, and a clean way to keep it together. I think it is light year ahead of the pipe with charcoal starter or butane torch set ups I have seen.

Ken, what material did you use to fabricate the outer sleeve?
And what wall thickness of aluminum pipe would be most efficient?
Thanks

I think I used a piece aluminum flashing from Home Depot. I have a bunch of .023" in the shop too. 1/8" plus wall thickness.

Just curious, why not put the blanket inside the pipe?
