To save you all from the math, the formula works out to:

String spacing at saddle= fretboard width at 12th fret.
Succinct and correct, why bother with the maths when it's as simple as this.

Darn and I've been using the multiplicative inverse of the quadratic equation 2x + y/3(x+Y)=Z!

I'll take a stab at this - forgive the crudeness of the drawing ;)
Also, this assumes the 12th fret is 12" from the nut.

Rick - thank you!

You have given a formula for the STRING spacing at the 12th fret. I just measured my Breedlove 000 and the string spacing at the saddle is 2 3/16", and at the 12th fret is 1 7/8". I haven't checked to see how that fits in your formula because I'm lazy, but it probably does. A useful thing to know.

My original question was on fretboard width, and we have that nailed down now as well.

Thanks to all.

This is simple geometry guys.......
center line, spacing at both ends from the center, connect the points.
Measure it twice and cut.
