I've blocksanded a guitar for hours before and after filling with West Systems epoxy. Results were nice, but very timeconsuming. Since then for home use I've bought a Makita 5" random action orbital sander which did a beautiful job on some raised panel doors I was refinishing. But doors are thicker than guitars - - - is this random action sander usable on guitar tops and backs without risk to the guitar? If it is, how fine a grit can I work up to before no more good can come of continuing to sand? I realize that I've embedded some references to sandpaper grit and when to stop sanding, however it's done.
Thanks very much.

Re: surface sanding
The ROS is an excellent tool for sanding guitars. I usually use 220 or 320, others will have their preferences but yes, by all means use the ROS.

Re: surface sanding
Use it to get close, then hand sand the rest of the way. RO sanders can get pretty aggressive pretty quickly. Don't ask.
So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.
