fretboard binding

Post by peter havriluk » Sun Jul 29, 2012 2:15 pm

I'm intending to bind the sides of the fretboard on a project in progress, so as to hide the tang of the fret, and for the experience of doing it. The project is a kit, the fretboard is tapered and the fret slots are cut. So....is it customary to (1) widen the fretboard with the bindings, or (2) should the fretboard be narrowed by the thickness of the bindings, and the bindings will restore the fretboard to its original width?

Thanks, folks.

Usually, an effort is made to keep the fretboard+binding = desired fretboard width. In other words, decide on what width fretboard you want, and include the binding into that width.

The second option you list is correct. ... "the fretboard be narrowed by the thickness of the bindings, and the bindings will restore the fretboard to its original width"

Don't forget to nip your tangs so they don't go through the binding!

Forgetting to cut back the tangs - - - that kind of mistake only gets made once. Trouble is, the word is 'once'. The heads-up is appreciated.
