I've been reading up on the use of Mohawk Pre catalyzed lacquer on guitars. I understand a bit about how it is different than regular nitro cellulose lacquer but appears it could work fine on an acoustic guitar
Has anyone here used it before can you tell about the experience you've had?
Thanks.

Re: Question about spraying Mohawk Pre Catalyzed Lacquer
I've used it for the last 3 bodies and am preparing to do three more soon. Seems fine and same as what I've used before.

Well that sounds encouraging Carl
What if any sealer? I've read from manufacturer that no sealer is needed on bare wood unless there's pore filling, then perhaps something to lock in hhe filler. Hmm.

I've been pore filling with Silvertip epoxy and don't sand back to wood so it becomes the seal coat. If no pore filler I just use a thin first coat of lacquer and then proceed with the rest of the coats normally.

Re: Question about spraying Mohawk Pre Catalyzed Lacquer
I got to thinking about your question about "pre catalyzed" lacquer, thought I should look it up. It's not the stuff I've been using. It only comes in spray cans. I've been using Mohawk Classic Instrument Lacquer, Clear Gloss, M610-1406, getting it from Amazon lately in quarts but used to get gallons of Cardinal lacquer from LMII. Allied has it. I spray with a gun in a spray booth. So disregard my first response to your question

Re: Question about spraying Mohawk Pre Catalyzed Lacquer
no problem Carl
The instrument lacquer is what I've always used, it's just getting so expensive. Shipping just adds to the pain.

Re: Question about spraying Mohawk Pre Catalyzed Lacquer
I use Amazon Prime for a lot of our family needs so the Mohawk cost $39/qt right now. I saw that a gallon of Cardinal was $87 at Allied but would have to pay for shipping.
