Glueing Purfling to Binding

Post by Carl Dickinson » Thu Jun 06, 2024 12:19 am

I glued up a purfling/binding set for the latest build. Manzanita w/ B/M/B on the edge. Used TBIII so it will hold together in the bender. I use the small Harbor Freight plastic clamps. The pads open up so they fit around the binding/purfing and keep it all lined up. Get the set in the tube, I think I've got three sets. They do occasionally break. Save the pieces to rebuild them, they're pretty cheap to get more. I use them for linings too.

Sorry it's upside down.

Manzanita? Wow. Have you bent it before?
I turn it on the lathe and it turns wonderfully.
That's how I do my glue up too only been using CA.
Clamp it together then wick it in

Good work Carl. If you make it work, hats off. But I was not very lucky with glueing these tiny parts together.
Nowadays I buy bass guitar fingerboards (850 mm/33.5" long) and glue colored veneer to it. When dry I cut the desired bindings from it. It gives me an easier process. Titebond 3 is a good choice. It does not loosen during bending.

Yes, I've used Manzanita for binding on 4 guitars now. It bends real easy in a fox type bender and holds the bend very well. I've also got it to bend in a tight circle on a hot pipe for soundhole lining. Here's the parlor that is all wood off my property. The bridge, rosette (natural edge burl pieces with soundhole lining), binding and fretboard are Manzanita.

Tried it with CA. Worked fine and easier than applying the glue then clamping. Held together while bending too. Thanks, Kevin.

I just use clothespins. Clamp it up first and wick thin CA on it.
