I too am just looking for a fret that is easier to push in - is there a dremel bit of some sort that would take down those barbs?

One of the mini Dremel grinding wheels should work OK -- lots of different shapes. A while back i bought an assortment package from Harbor freight -- has a zillion pieces for about $5

Still thinking about this.
First, though a question - why the big change from bar frets to modern tanged frets? Greven has used bars:

And another crazy question - why not glue tangless frets right to the top of the fretboard?

Methinks it is easier to cut a slot exactly where it belongs, than to clamp a smooth bottomed fret where it belongs. Besides, 100 years from now when a 2016 Indian Rosewood Martin D-28 is worth $100k, everyone will be absolutely convinced frets with a tang sound better.
