Florentine Cutaway

Here the result of the binding on the top is shown. The edge at the fingerboard is not to my standards, but as said, it wil be covered. Here the routing of the dovetail is done, and totally as I want it. Right position, perpendicular and at the right distance to the cutaway.



The other side went not that well. I made the neck a touch short. To make the dovetail fit right to the end in the body, the 14th fret wont be spot on the edge of the body. So I offered the customer two options: Or keep the neck and make it a 25,3 inch scale. Or, I'm up to make a new neck. I'm fine with both. We'll see what he wants.


On the back the sequence is the same as on the top. After routing the cutawaybinding is glued in first.


Then the tiny work with the scalpel is done on the outer points. Take your time! And all will be fine! Uhu uhu. Almost a text for a rapsong.:-)


Result after glueing the rest. Hmm, not that bad at all, imo.

Kevin, the issue with the neck is this:
Above you can see I made the neck that far, with a headstock and a heel.
Because of the headstock, the position of the nut is fixed. From there I wanted to use a 25.5"scale.
From that the position of the 14th fret (bodyedge) also is bound. (Number 1 in the picture) From there I needed about 0,8"of wood to create the dovetail. Stupid me cut of the excess to much and left me with 0.6" of wood for the dovetail. (No. 2 in the picture)

I do not want my dovetail too shallow, so need to use a piece of the neck (1/6") to make the dovetail fit correct. But, in option A,then the 14th fret would be over the body.
Option B is to make a new neck. Not my favorite, but doable.
Option 3 is to us a bit shorter scale. 25.3". Not a industrial standard, but few will know in the end.

I was honest to my customer, and he did not mind. So 25.3"it will be. We'll keep this neck.

I do not understand: I cut already twice, and it still is too short. Help!! :-)

Again I got away with it!
Normally I make a headplate that ends at the fingerboardside with a perpendicular edge. Now I cut the neck a bit too short, I thought: why not make a LesPaul like nut? Those where the nut lies on the angled headplate.

So I glued the headplate on and sanded it flat with the neck.
Look at the pics, but now I have won a few millimeters and am able to head for the 25,5"scale. Pffff.
