HF trim router runout

Post by peter havriluk » Mon Mar 31, 2014 4:03 pm

I know someone who bought one of these and didn't take it out of the box for a year and when he did he found that there was a lot of runout in the chuck, leaving the tool not good for much. He was curious to know if the runout problem was so widespread as to render the tool to be one to be avoided without question, or whether there was an even chance of the next one he bought running true, and he could return the sick one for a refund and keep the good one. When he approached the HF store to swap one-for-one they said tough luck, you waited too long, so he was stuck with a new and useless tool.

I have 3 of those routers. One I've been using for 6 years and it has been fine, with my bindings coming out as good as I would expect, another is fine too. The 3rd I used once and the collet nut cross threaded (I know how to avoid this, but it was happening before I knew it).
I have a Porter Cable on my binding routing machine I built. Is it better? I don't know, but it works good too.

The orange ones were fine -- the black ones not so much
