DIY Drum Sander Easy as pie!!

How simple is this? I believe this came from the Guild of American Luthier's many years ago - note the bearings are holes drilled into Mahogany with a drop of oil!!

Google DYI sanding drum or drum sander there's bunches of ways to make a drum out of wood disks, pvc pipe, old conveyor rollers etc.

If you have a lathe, you have a drum sander. This was my first sander. I turned a hunk of 4x4 round and added a drum belt. A piece of melamine sitting on the ways with another hunk of melamine hinged to it for an adjustable sanding surface. I did tops, sides, and backs for two guitars on that setup.


Since then I found a used 16 in. Delta with a big bunch of new belts at a very good price. I bought it from a pro woodworker who replaced it with one big enough to do a door in a single pass. Now that's some serious drum sanding.

I think it would work just fine Ken...how large a motor do you think you would need? 4" pulley top-side...1 horse? Motor pulley size or RPMS?

My 10-20 sander has a 1 horse motor if I recall. I don't know the correct size pulley for your motor, nor am I smart enough to calculate what size pulleys to use to get the RPMs correct. I also do not know what the correct RPMs would be!! I am seriously useless!!
