Sound Hole Rosette re-do

I saved that top I had mentioned at an earlier time and I'm happy with the results, I think it will be fine. But what I got in addition to what i believe was a Martin 2nd or reject, was a top that already had the hole cut and that crappy (Black/white- Blue/white or what ever it is) rosette installed. Just looking at it it seems BLUE but under a 10X it seems to be BLACK...

So...is there any way to re-cut or remove at least SOME of the horrible looking stuff they put in there and make something pleasing to the eye with the sound hole already cut and still keep it round? It seems to ME that I saw something somewhere where it was done and it was fairly simple, but I'll be darned if I can find it...
any suggestions? Anyone try this?

Thanks, Ray :>)

Since the top is off of the guitar and no longer braced, you can do the following:
clamp it to a flat surface
locate the center of the hole
drill a pilot hole for your rosette/ circle cutting doodad
route out the current rosette and make room for the new one.

Here is a method for locating the center of a circle:

There are other ways to do this, but that is a pretty easy method. If the top were on a guitar, it becomes a whole other kettle of fish.

What is this thing, a 'doo-dad'?
(This is called throwing Tony a softball and watching him hit it out of the park. :-))

Out of the park, over the hot dog stand outside the park, out over city hall and into the countryside, lodging in the highest limbs of a majestic oak. Well done.
