I took a chip out of my beloved veritas block plane blade when it encountered a &*^&%$&*()&*((*(*&*^&%#$!@@@#$$% heretofore hidden nail.
New blade $26. I've not ground a plane blade - big deal, or just buy a replacement?

Won't hurt to try a re-grind just make sure to keep it cool.

If you have a belt sander you can do it easily, but just touch the belt with stabbing motions, and quench it often.
First sand the edge flat past the ding, then re-establish the bevel.

Actually not that big a deal, it happens. And there is a lot of steel on that plane blade that can be ground off to make it nice again. Like Kevin said, if you have a belt sander it's a quick job. If you have the Veritas MarkII honing guide (or any honing guide really), you can also just use coarse (200 should work) sandpaper on a sheet of glass and then progressively finer grades. Takes longer of course, but I've done that a few times.

Thats a real bummer, but at least is was the blade that was damaged and not the sole of the plane. I bought a used Ace Hardware plane for $9.00 but it needed serious lapping to get the sole flat. I don't have a belt sander so did it all by hand. It took forever. Or like, a bunch of hours.

Oh dear, I also spent hours as well on a plane and I have a belt sander. I never thought to start on it :O.
