Eric's first kit - KMG 00

Post by Dave Bagwill » Fri Jan 11, 2013 4:37 pm

I'm guiding a fella named Eric in building a kit here in my shop. We're having a ball, he's getting some skills and is doing a fine job. Here are a few pix and I'll try to follow up with more as he progresses. The back is gluing on right now.
He already has his next 3 projects planned out. This kit is one of Ken's experiential line which I've mentioned before.

I usually use a vacuum bag but wanted Eric to know how to use conventional clamps. We did vacuum the back however.

He's never used a sharp chisel before and was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was.

A couple more pix. If 'a couple' means 'three'.

We seriously needed only a few bands because we spent serious time fitting the braces to the notches. But hey, the box of bands was right there, so..

Using the kmg binding channel system to trim the top overlap after gluing. Easy as pie.

We cut some bindings out of brazilian cherry, installed them, now it is clean up the body time. BTW we laminated together the BC at .045" to make .090" bindings and they just laid right into the channels we'd cut with the kmg cutter; we super glued them in. Eric is cleaning up the binding using a little shop-made tool that is good for that, and also great for cleaning out binding channels and other uses.
A good day in the shop.
Note that the bc does not show up well in the photo - it is actually a somewhat red wood (not as dark as bloodwood) under finish and sets off the walnut nicely.

Very nice. I have three guys who want me to help them build, but I don't have the space to do so. I wish I did.
