Water in the shop!!

Medford had its largest rainfall day in history yesterday, and my shop has water in it. Not much - it covers the floor, but no depth really - what is the best way to get that water up? Is there a substance that can sop it up and then be swept up and thrown away?

Also - even with the dehumidifier at full strength, the humidity jumped up to 59%. I keep things at 40% usually; how much effect will that one night of high humidity affect things?

There's absorbent sweeping compounds at the commercial supply houses, also tubes/snakes. Some heat and a bunch of fans blowing toward the out of doors will help. Don't do any glue ups until you have this under control, as you know that should be done when the wood is at its smallest dimensions.

Dave, if you don't have enough sawdust on the floor to soak up that water, then yer not cuttin' enuf wood and yer enjoyin' retirement too much.

Seriously, sorry to hear about it.
Basement workshop used to get water during heavy spring rains. Shop vac set for liquids, then a combination of heaters, fans, and the dehumidifier got it dry right quick. Once I got tired of that ritual every spring, finally broke down and corrected drainage around the outside of the house!

BTW, the one night of higher humidity won't hurt as long as you follow Ken's advice- don't do any work where you're playing with dimensions.

Sorry to hear it buddy! Do you have a shop vac? Should be wetor dry. Suck up the water, dump out the cannister, then get some fans blowing to dry out the rest.

Making some headway. Using the vac wet, does one remove the filter first?

Yes, remove the filter or it will get wet.

Good luck with the water. Sorry to hear about it.
