It's that time of year!

Post by Robert Hosmer » Tue Sep 18, 2012 9:52 pm

It's that time of year!
No, I don't mean Christmas.
I'm talking about those telltale signs that the fall season is on the way.

One of my work areas is the large furnace room down in the basement. Got some equipment down there, but more importantly I also store a bunch of wood down there.
The walls are the original brick covered with some sort of plaster-like covering (not plaster, but not cement either). The floors are concrete, and there is an open crawl space connected to this room.
Needless to say, having the 70 pint dehumidifier set at 40% means that puppy runs a lot! (The only time I have noticed it shut off is during winter.)
I also have a huge older model, and I know it might do me some good to run both of them, but the newer model stays steady at 45% by itself.

A long time ago I disconnected the water drain leading to the sump pump because I wanted to see how often the bucket was filling up, plus I got tired of tripping over the hose.
I like to keep notes of elapsed time before the bucket fills up.
Spring and summer, I'll empty that thing every 8 hours.
Wintertime..... well, you know.

So how do I know the fall season is coming?
Yesterday, I went 11 hours before the bucket filled. Today I made it 12 hours!

A weatherman I am not, but.....

Always have plenty of sandpaper; it's rough out there!

Easy now Robert! That all sounds like a bit too much excitement for this guy! I'm going to stick with my usual activities. Building guitars, watching grass grow, and watching paint dry. I don't want to have a stroke at 39!! All this running around, emptying the dehumidifier tank, who ever heard of such a thing?? Nope. Sitting still is where its at man.

That's OK Tony!
Sometimes I have to stop, catch my breath, and let the pulse slow down a little when things like this happen.

Thought I was gonna have to go see the doc yesterday when I went 16 hours before emptying! Plus, the first time since early spring that the RH down there was stabilized at 40%.

Pulled some leg muscles, and my back don't feel so good, either. I guess flips in the air are only for the young.
Guess that's what I get for finally being able to spray some lacquer outdoors without having to use a retarder.

My daughter says old people ought not to get like this!

What qualifies as old in your daughter's book? I certainly wont be doing any flips and I am only 39!

I turn 41 in a few weeks, so I'm right there with ya, Tony.
Not that I'm "old", but as you asked, what qualifies as old in her book! (According to her, Dad is older than the hills.)
It doesn't help that my hearing isn't what it should be, so that gives her more fuel for the fire.

No flips in the air, but she does find it comical when I appear interested about things that seem otherwise insignificant to her.
So she says those little comments like "Don't get so excited that you start doing flips, Dad. Old people aren't supposed to act like that. You know that's not safe."

I see your daughter has a good sense of humor! I have done an occasional somersault as recently as last week but I try not to make a habit out of it. It's dangerous business what with the spinning and my head being so near the floor. I might get dizzy and bonk my head on the floor or something! No thank you! I'll stick to my power tools and alcohol! Nothing dangerous about them!

I attempted one (1) somersault and failed. This was back in high school PE class - if any of you remember when that was required - I'd go from PE, then home to use what they called a TYPEWRITER for homework, unless I had to call a friend on the ROTORY DIAL TELEPHONE, which was cool because when I was small, I picked up the phone and got an OPERATOR who did - operate - by plugging jacks into a big board to connect me to my friend's house - a step above two oatmeal cartons joined by a string and a button - and my friend's "number" was like "Olive2427" - but have I digressed a bit from the PE class? :-)
