Cutting a slot for the truss rod, new bit, feeding from right to left and wham!

It' a clear grained blank, so I don't think a knot. It is laminated with dyed maple strips.

Well --been working wood since about 1959 never saw anything like that!
To me it looks like the bit walked out of the collet and back in. Did it feel like the router jumped when it made the noise?

Also it it looks like the carbide broke off one side lodged in the wood then the other side of the bit instantly whacked into the immovable fragment.

Ken you are correct on all counts. Little pieces of metal are imbedded in the wood.
I have the router mounted under a router table which I have not used before. Crap, maybe my feed direction is wrong.
