What's the deal with tentallones?

I think Brian on this Forum mentioned that he uses tentallones to join the top to the rim. and I've seen it done on youtube, but noone has explained to me the 'why' of it.
Is it for traditional reasons/structural reasons or what?
For those of you that do it, what is your method?

No advantage over standard kerfing -- a disadvantage over reverse rounded kerfing -- just an old "fangled" way of doing it. Sides bent on a pipe tentallones glued along the profile drawn on the sound board then the side is glued to the triangles and SB. -- No mold is used.

I tried ten tall ones once before and was hungover for the whole weekend:)
