Acoustic Guitar Construction

Well, goodness - it would cost me $48 per instrument to line with this stuff. Is there ANY way it could be worth it?

I have never seen that particular company's product, but I have seen this stuff:

It is only $30 for a whole guitar worth and it definitely looks cool. I have wanted to try it, but I always forget when it comes time to install linings. The special clamps they sell specially made to conform to the linings are pricey!!

Has anyone tried either one?
John Parchem has used Purflex purfling, but I don't recall him mentioning the linings at all.

I use Kevin Ryan's kerfing on my cut aways, great product, smells great and looks really nice. They ship really fast, their Zipflex is good also.

The Ryan A4 kerfing works really well. The nice thing is it also flexes along the length to conform to the radius...especially helpful on the back

Interesting how design philosophies can vary. If following the Charles Fox rim theory (and others) kerfing flex along the length of the sides is not necessarily a good thing. While I think that the Fox method of double sides laminated kerfing is perhaps an over kill (his rim have been referred to as a boat haul) to me the laminated effect of reverse rounded kerfing adds to the stability of the assembly. As compared to a rim using standard triangle linings it is very apparent that the RR rim is much stiffer/rigid/stable – it would seem that this has some acoustic advantages. I have not personally checked his writings, but I believe Trevor Gore now subscribes to this idea.

I would think having a seam and or leaving the lining proud and sanding back the excess is OK too, most factory video’s including Martin and Taylor indicate that slitting, fitting and trimming ribbon lining is the normal process.

That said – these flexible lining are a pretty cool idea/design.

I used the A4 in a couple of guitars. It is really cool looking in the guitar. That kerfing went around curves easy enough. It was not much better following the rim profile. I liked it but do to the price I went back to regular or reverse kerfed linings.

A plus when guitar people looked at the instrument they were always excited to see the A4.
