can we use woods for backs and sides that are not quartersawn? i have some mahogany that i salvaged.Is it worth even trying. Thanks guys.

Sure. Quartersawn is ideal, but not necessary for the backs. Sides.....you could try, I would be concerned about cupping. I have some QS wenge I am using for sides, but not for backs. Show us some pictures?

One advantage to using flat (or slab) sawn woods is that they are less likely to split. I have a couple of sets that I'm going to use.

When bending flat sawn sides I use very little water. None on the wood itself and dampened craft paper on each side. No problems, so far.

Figured flat/slab sawn material in my estimation and experience, gets mixed reviews and mixed results -- so much so that I personally don't use it for backs and sides. I am even careful with my selections of riff sawn wood -- simply, I hate to make the effort, spend the time and end up with something that is not usable -- did/does not happen every time but enough to make me a great fan of 1/4 sawn material for B&S.
