Hi Gang
This is a question because I have never tried it/done it before so looking for some helpful input.
I have some plastic bw purfling material left over from my archtop guitar project. I'd like to use it perhaps on the new OM I've started.
My question is this; I know I can glue the plastic purfling to the edge of my wood binding using the special adhesive I used on the archtop, but can I then bend the binding in my machine and expect the purfling to make it through, remain attached to the binding and not melt or deform???
I saw how easy it was to use heat from a hair dryer to soften the purfling to bend it where needed so wonder how it will do under a heat blanket at 275 degrees.
If anyone has done this or tried it I'd love to hear about it.
If need be ill glue up a strip and do a test bend and see what happens.
It MAY be possible to bend and push this BW .020 purfling into the channel under the binding during glue up, but I know how almost impossible it is to do this with the fiber or the wood purfling strips.
Thanks for you help, comments and or insights.
Kevin

Re: Question about wood binding with plastic side purfling
Kevin, I've installed the purfling in a channel left by a 1/16" UHMW spline I bought from S-M. Spline gets taped into place, binding gets installed above the spline, spline removed after the glue dries and the purfling gets inserted into the channel after that. I haven't wanted to play 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' trying to glue purfling to binding and then bend the composite. I've figured my gluing just wasn't going to be consistent enough. My friend Duco attended the party.

Peter
Are you talking about doing this on side purfling below the binding?

Kevin, yes. Install binding sitting atop spline (spacer), let the glue dry, pull out the spline and fill the channel the spline left behind with purfling. As long as what I intend to put in the channel is 1/16" thick (tall), I'm on my way.

Hmmm
What I'm thinking of using is .040", BW.

Kevin, pick a color for a third .020" layer of purfling and you can use the spline and not fuss with laminating purfling to the binding.
