Is the jury still out on CA as a grain filler?

CA as a grain filler sure looked promising. Have there been any modifications to the process that have given good consistent results?

At last check the guy that posted the idea admitted to having nitro finish failures.

But that same guy doesnt do his own finishing so it's kind of tough to take any advice in that arena from him. Personally, I like z poxy and timber mate. Both work well for me.
Why did you want to try CA?

I have used CA and it is easy, very clear, a cinch to sand if done right. I was warned off it, and being more of a noob then than I am now, I just went on to other things.
There are a number of threads on the interweb by folks who have been using it for years with no problems - other than are spraying something on it that has a high acetone content, which can soften the CA.
Opinion seems to be that a coat of shellac over the ca is a good idea.
I'm still looking for more case history, and even contacted that other luthier in search of info. I regret that a little. :-)

Perhaps its a personal thing -- but I am not getting the idea of using shellac as a band-aid to over come compatibility issues in a finishing process. All the chemicals in a "true finishing system" are in fact compatible and all of them stick to each other. Why compromise? If you were offering a life time warranty on something would you take such a chance? -- Not me.

That's the key point, for sure.
Would you say the the z-poxy product might be liable to the same problems?

There's plenty of stories involving Zpoxy and System three where adhesion problems occur after the fact and during the finishing process -- regular epoxy glues as well. If there was a major manufacturer that use this type of product I'd consider it -- I know of none. On the other hand there are those that just love it -- time will tell what to expect long term. Back to your point, one of the pioneers Mike Doollin, warns "not to use" shellac when epoxy is use as a filler. And there are those that state you must sand back to bare wood and those that swear by finishing the filling process with a wash coat of epoxy ---- so I guess for those thinking about this procedure have a lot to think about. For me its a proven complete, compatible system and that will always be my recommendation.
