I had to replace a nut so I just tried out this european guitar nut making tool and was really impressed. First warning it is a lot more expensive than a half pencil, but I am writing about it because it allowed me to make a better nut. Here is a link to the instructions. I have never been so close just running the process. If the frets are worn a bit, there is some gauged wire to lift the nut deepening the slots. THe default worked for me.

The tool has a vice to hold the nut. The vice has two sliding plates. Indexed on fret board the vice is set to the depth of the slot. This creates a step in the jig identical to the guitars nut slot depth. A template is attached to the vice that allows one to properly size and radius the nut.
Filing or sand into to the edges of the vice, perfectly sizes and radius the nut, such that when the slots are cut there will be a bit more on the bass side than the treble.
Sized nut
The nut size template is swapped out for as string depth template and a proportionally spaced slot guide is added.
The string spacing guide is removed after slotting the nut to depth. Still in the vice nut files gauge the slots, using the vice as a reference.
The nut was perfect for all but the two bass strings (probably my preference). Just took a few strokes to correct.
