Sanding the Rim - Top side question...

Hi all,

Reading Ken's topic "top edge contouring" he states "For the “000 deep body" in these photos the rise is
the same thickness of 8 standard 3x5 cards."

I'm getting ready to sand out my rims on my 14 fret drednought... can someone tell me how many "idex cards" or a dimension to raise my top rim at the neck for 1.5 degree angle?

Thanks - Glen

What angle is the neck heel?

I'm pretty sure it's 1.5 degrees. I don't currently have any tools to measure it accurately.

Ken,

You just made me think about this harder...

I could square off of the front of the neck and measure the difference of distance at the heel of the neck...

That should do it, right?

Glen

If there is an angle most likely its 1.3 my guess is the neck came form the Martin factory -- does it have two locating pins?

At any rate the measurement is the same for all models provided the neck cheeks have the 1.3+/- degree angle.

I assume you are going to follow the entire procedure for establishing the slope? If you are also going to radius the rim with a bar or dish, things will not work out mathematically and you could end up with a mess. As indicated on the tutor and the accompanying Martin factory video there is no beveling of the sound board edge of the rim -- not sure where the other myths arouse?

It's a bolt-on neck... one bolt.

That was my plan... from your website.

Are you talking about your tutorial? I didn't see a Martin factory video... I'll go back and look. As of yet, the top rim has not been radiused. I was planning on taking the 28' radius bar to the top rim but haven't yet.

The two pins would be on the fingerboard plane --

You can't mix and match your processes -- no where in my instructions does it say to use a radius bar on the top edge of the rim. The KMG process is exactly what is done at the Martin factory rim sanded flat and then sloped.
