The times I made a slotted headstock, I put the template in place with double sided tape. But I found that it had too much slack.
Now I made a second template that is longer and that can be attached with some screws to an extended part of the headstock. And a screw close to the nut, where the wood has to be taken off. Now I was able to rout it with my laminate trimmer, without whobbles and flaws.

Don't mind the repairs on the template. Cut twice, still to short!

Nice, so the screws are always in the waste. I have had even good carpet installation double sided tape slip and ruin head stocks.

The two way tape I use to secure templates and use to hold down small blanks for machining has a thin layer of foam (modelers call it servo tape) , it will not move and in fact is a PIA to remove. An alternative that I now use for cut-outs like the slots only, is a bead of hot melt glue around the perimeter also very secure, and the good news is that a few drops of alcohol releases the HMG instantly residue free.

I'm so glad I am not the only one who had struggles with this issue.

Are there many builders here that use the masking tape and superglue method instead of double-sided tape. The former is my go-to method for temporarily holding things down, mostly because of the difficulty of removing the ds-tape.
