I don't think I would ever use paste wax on a guitar. However, there is nothing to preclude following the method up to the stage before waxing, then stopping.

I think that a number of luthiers use automotive wax. And I hear that renaissance wax is good also. Any opinions?

For me automotive wax is the final step in a high gloss. Do not smear, just a hint of mist.
Ready in 30 seconds. I have this Renaissance Wax and that works well too, but it has to harden for a day. Chance of leaving fingerprints.

I use Minwax -- Hard Finishing wax on the fingerboard only. Last chemical on the gloss finish is a polish (Wizard's Shine Master), no wax.

Well, looking at this: I called it a automotive wax, but I'm not shure it is a wax. It dries within a few minutes, so maybe it is a polish (whatever that is) after all, and not a wax. Mine is from Innotec. Not shure it is available in the US.

I am moving toward a "flat" no gloss finish for my stuff, I really like the look. A side benefit is that the bridge can be glued on in advance of spraying. Process is -- spray, let dry.

The down side, to restore the finish more chemical has to be sprayed. In other words there is no amount of rubbing or polishing that will match the original surface.

I have not tried the Enduro flat -- but it is available.
