Padding for cauls and clamps

Post by John Link » Fri May 29, 2015 2:56 pm

I just received some open-cell polyurethane foam sheeting with an adhesive back from Amazon. It looks very good for using on cauls and wooden clamps. The adhesive side is aggressive, the foam recovers nicely from compression, the firmness seems about right, it cuts easily and precisely, it grips the clamped object well, and the 1/8" thickness seems about right too, though you can get it in other sizes. It is superior in every way to the felt I have gotten from the usual luthier oriented sources. One square foot for ten bucks.

Just be careful it won't eat into your guitar finish if it is nitro. Many soft plastics like that dissolve it.

I'll set up at test piece and see if it harms it or not.

Looks like it might work. I use leather since I always have it around and that works really well too.
