Another drum sander.

Post by John J » Sat May 16, 2015 10:23 pm

I built this drum sander based on a free plan found on the web. Works great. Plenty of power and actually very little dust. I thinned down a practice side no problem.

John that is sweet. I like the Velcro paper. I have wondered if there would be too much "cushion" from that though. No problems?

I've only sanded down an orphan side of mahogany. It came out to a nice and even thickness to about .076" from .110". Lots of light passes versus trying to force it. So far so good.

I'm gathering parts to build this sander. I have the 1" shaft and the pillow block bearings. I'll be using 36" long shaft because of limited space. Should be wide enough for 2 back plates. What diameter pulleys are you using for shaft and motor? Where do you source the Velcro sandpaper and backing? Did you use the the same table tilt adjustment screw system shown on the plans? I will incorporate your sled. Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Brad

I'll pm you the details. (not supposed to link to suppliers I think)
Here's a couple of shots of the tilt bolt.
Make sure you make and use the dust hood! Mine is hooked up to my massive dust collection system. Well it's just an old craftsman shop vac with a dust deputy in-line. But it helps with the ever present wood dust problem. Good luck.
