I have my router mounted underneath a table. I have not really messed with the speed knob - it stays pretty much in the middle.
How do you choose whether to increase or decrease your router speed?

Re: Effects of different router speeds?
Interesting question. I always just have mine at full speed.
Re: Effects of different router speeds?
With bits up to 1" run full speed. The control is necessary when you start using large diameter molding cutters and the like. Those large bit generate extreme "tip" speed which could cause the bit to self distuct. There is also correlation with feed and "tip" speed to help prevent burn marks when routing hardwoods. But with smaller diameter bits it easier to just practice to determine the best feed rate and leave the speed at the high setting.
