How to tell Red/Adirondack from Sitka Spruce braces?

Post by Daniel P » Tue Dec 23, 2014 1:37 am

I've got a box of brace material coming in the mail, some Sitka and some Red/Adirondack Spruce - the guy had a mixed pile, and they are unmarked.

As a general rule I know Adirondack has wider grain lines, but I'm guessing that going to be tough to use to tell the difference on a bunch of brace wood.

Is there any solid way to differentiate between the two?

Run the wood against a power sander -- to me Sitka has an unmistakable odor when being processed.

Also, most the time Adirondack is "whiter" and Sitka is "tanner."
I've "Ben-Had" again!
