a hard piece of Maple

Post by Dave Bagwill » Tue Dec 09, 2014 5:57 pm

I've not worked with maple, but I am now sanding down a back set. This is stiff and hard wood. What thickness is in the ball park for this stuff?

Only set I did I took down same as others .100". It was hard and stiff as well. have to be careful you don't burn it while sanding.

Already a light searing, Tim, but it's cleared up.

If you are using a sander to get to the desired thickness, run the piece thru the sander twice at the same setting. In most cases, most any burn marks will be gone. I've built four Maple body guitars, all flame Maple and I took them down to .100 - .105 the J-185 at .105 smaller bodies at .100

Anything other than Zirconia grade abrasive on a drum sander will be a disappointment

We use this

The AO stuff I'm using sure does take a lot of time.

Agree, 0.100" will do.
My expirience with maple is that it can be from quite soft to very very hard.
