Fake Abalone

Post by ken cierp » Tue Aug 26, 2014 7:25 pm

I have seen this plastic material, Green Abalone that is indistinguishable from the real deal -- now before answering, some of the most expensive automobiles made today have fake wood trim.

So why can't we use plastic without the fear, shame and the threat of banishment?

Plastic tortoise-shell bindings look very nice imo, as long as you take the time to polish them up real good.

If the stuff you're talking about is indistinguishable, maybe a customer would not mind saving a few bucks.

I have always assumed Grit Laskin uses "unnatural" stuff to create his large areas of flat color.

This is my first build so I went out on a limb. I am using abalonoid that I ordered from Germany. I think it looks good. What do you guys think?

I think it looks good. What wood are you going to use for the bindings.

Looks great Michael,
Our mind ticks us, when thinking about what is the "real" thing.
Most of the time we act like children. And binding is about aethetics and if things look great, they look great.
So don't bother.
