I purchased a 1/4 " nut from stew Mac. And it is exactly that. Do you guys go a tad smaller for the final thickness on setup? The last one they sent me was a tad smaller.

I have used 1/4" but mostly go smaller now, usually 3/16.

I am around 1/4" but for a final thickness I make the nut fit the space between the fret board and the head stock veneer. If the nut you got was a little thick sand the side facing the head stock untill it fits.

I agree -- nut thickness can vary, I've even seen some and thin as 1/8" -- but as mentioned its generally is dimensioned to fill the gap between the HS veneer and the end of the finger-board.

Okay guys thanx. My first build a made a spacer block and glued it between headstock and top of FB before I glued those pieces up and it held everything just nice. So I guess really I'm asking if 1/4 is to big. I can adjust the space to any size with the spacer block

You can use a spacer to make the slot fit the nut. 1/4" is OK. I have a brass bar that I use, so all of my nuts are the same width. I fix where I want the fret board and use the spacer to set where I want the head stock veneer.
