Will this work?

I need to cut through a 1" steel bar - a barbell, as a matter of fact.
I have a black and decker tool with a cutoff wheel designed for steel. Pic attached.
Will that tool be up to the job? Any hints, as I've never used such a tool? Thanks

Sure they work, they have cut off wheels for stainless vs soft steel.

Thanks John - about how long should I expect it to take, to cut through the 1" steel bar?

When they cut it goes fast. I have not done stainless, but I have recently used one to cut 1/2" hardened steel bolts. It took much less than a minute. I used much thinner cutoff wheels than the one in the picture. Although that might be a grinding wheel.

Yes, Dave it won't be sophisticated, but it will cut. Even through stainless steel. Takes about 1 minute for 1".
I guess you're already done.

Yes they cut quickly and a great tool. As with anything else in the world of power tools they can be very dangerous. In my trade this seems to cause the most injuries out of the tools we use. I'm a steamfitter. When they bite, they bite hard. I like to keep the work positioned at the bottom of the wheel, with the sparks shutting at my feet. This ensures that if the wheel binds up in the work and gets away from you the grinder goes away from you and not at you.
