Scalloped bracing. Positions of the high points.

Post by Herman » Mon May 19, 2014 2:05 pm

Most of us use a Martin style to shape scalloped X-bracing. The peaks are about 3 1/2 inches from the sides.
I wondered what it would sound like, when these peaks were made on a different position.
Does anyone tried that? 'cause I don't feel like trying something like that and end up with a disappointment.
To little time, you know.

In theory -- scalloping the braces allows the center of the sound board to move more freely than parabolic or straight bracing. So again in theory -- if you move the point of the scallop inward you would be tightening up the center of the sound board thus decreasing bass response increasing treble response -- That's all I got.

I try to keep the high points 3- 3 1/2" from the edges. Any closer to the edge, or course, and you are adding mass the that part of the top that is usually, by design, thinner. As Ken says, any closer to the X, and the top does not move as much. Robbie O'Brien makes the point that 3" is about right.
I know you already knew that, Herman, but I felt like making a contribution anyway! :-)

I have to say that I've not experimented with this. I have braced without scallops, but using a long taper from the center to the edge of the soundboard on the lower arms of the X brace. That guitar sounded a little different, but not really better or worse as best I could tell.
Herman, when you have time to build one for yourself and you want to experiment, do it then, otherwise you may as well stick with the "tried and true" method. I too felt like I should impart my wisdom upon the conversation. :)

My friends, you give me all you got, contributions and wisdom. Wow, where else do you find that for free.
Well I keep my peaks at the proven points. Thanks.
