Controlling the Finger-board extension

Post by ken cierp » Fri Jan 13, 2012 11:05 am

Personally I like true "bolt-on" necks -- that is to say its removable and the finger-board extension is not glued to the sound board. But there are times when the extension is not cooperative or in my case I wanted to actually be able to adjust the extension via decorative shims. The example is my nylon string hybrid and my concern was keeping the string height the same along the entire length of the fingerboard -- which is a good goal for any build -- its what Bob Taylor is trying to accomplish with his designs. Anyway -- its fairly simple in concept, pocket holes are drilled in the finger-board, the studs (8-32 screws) are epoxied in the pockets. On the interior I added hardwood reinforcements so there will be good compression. The extension is fastened with a nylon washer and nylon insert lock nuts. Of course location will depend on your brace pattern -- but this give you the idea.
