Hi all. I made a bone-headed mistake. When I trimmed back the veneer for the nut slot I somehow managed to get it a hair too wide. My nut is 1/4 inch wide but I am off on the slot by a hair. I know I need a snug fit. Looks like I am going to learn how to make a nut from scratch. I cannot seem to find a source for bone nut blanks that are over 1/4 in. though. Does anyone know of a source? I am off by about 1/32 of an inch. Just enough to make it a sloppy fit. Cant beleive I did that. Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou. Jon

You could fill the head stock side with a thin contrasting veneer stripe, might look better than a "fat' nut? Two thin pieces of bone will bond perfectly using CA, just make sure the surfaces are dead flat. I use multi layer bone made this way for extra-wide compensated saddles.

I did the same thing on my first guitar. I just added a stripe of maple to fill the gap. It looked good. Try it!

Thanks for the feed back guys. Sounds like a filler strip wil be the way to go. I agree a fat nut would not look good. Jon

I have some .010" black fiber for purflings that works great for this kind of thing.
