Shooting board for tapering fingerboard?

Post by Daniel P » Fri Feb 07, 2014 8:54 pm

Any of you using a shooting board and plane for tapering your fingerboard?

My band saw, leaves a lot to be desired, and I'm really enjoying working with hand planes - seems like a clean way to taper the fingerboard. Just need to shim the fingerboard to the correct angle for the taper.

Any tips for the set up?

That's what I do -- draw the guide lines on the flat side, clamp it to a straight hardwood 1x3, clamp it in vise than shave away.

With the above set-up the straight edge keeps the plane perpendicular, shave down until you touch it. Goes very fast.

I trim most of the material away on the band saw, then hand plane on the shooting board.
Works good for me.
