Acoustic Guitar Construction

I've have some Al Petteway recordings -- he is a master -- How do you think this Micheltte Rigid Rim guitar sounds? I have my opinion.

Well I'm sure it's a matter of taste but - if that is an accurate representation of the sound of that guitar - it's not really to my liking. I do like different sounding guitars, but that one strikes me as a bad compromise between ladder-braced sound and banjo. Still, it's a steal at $620.00......wait a minute...$6200.00?? :-)

Laminating the sides accomplishes the same goal of stiffening, and is a lot easier. And less expensive.

It could be that many of us here will like that sound; it's just a little too far off the reservation for me.

Al is a great guitarist....I think the mic setup for the room size, was all wrong...but no, I don't like the result at all and I would not be surprised to see that most don't either.

Here's another chance to hear them (His multiple models) under a little bit better circumstances and a proper mic. The player does a fine job too....I'm suspicious that these guitars may sound really good "Plugged in" in the hands of someone like Al Petteway or Tommy Emmanuel...in an room that large... but that's just me.

In any event, I would never pay that much money for a guitar, but a lot of folks do! Whew.. I can't even imagine. :>)

For whatever reasons, that sounded better than the Petteway clip.

I Could not make heads or tails of the first clip posted. I thought the second clip that Ken posted sounded great. I thought it was nicely balanced across the voices. The bass punched through without being boomy. The middle and high voice were very clean with great separation. I would be very happy to have a guitar that sounded that good.

My ear is hearing a much "smaller guitar" -- re: resonance and bass response, it has clarity and balance, seems responsive (in a jazzy sort of way), but not getting a lot of big sweet overtones or noteworthy sustain. Is it me or does is sound a bit like this little one?
