This headstock - don't worry about the tuners, I've made arrangement for that - but the strength of the headstock? I'll be (if I do it) making a steel string version of the instrument and have most of it figured out as far as internal changes to accommodate the SS - but it was designed after all for gut strings.

Splines? CF rods? Volute? Does it really need anything - I'll be stringing it light.
Thanks

I am not sure it needs anything, my steel string necks have always been thinner than my classical because of players preferences. You might want a truss rod so that you can set the relief.

My bad, John - I forgot to add a pic of the actual headstock I'll be using. How does this stack up?

I only have an opinion, but I still think that there would be no problem with the neck or headstock for use as a steel string. I like that the tuners are all in line with the nut slots. Do you think the stock low E string will be long enough. It might be but it would be worth checking. Normally it is one of the shortest strings in the package now it needs to be the longest.

Dave, I too guess that you will be in the safezone.
On my baritone the neck (body to headstock) measures 16 inches and without extra support. Only light mahogany and stinged with heavy stuff (14-59).
After 5 years now the neck is in perfect condition.
Advise: Do not worry.
