Spruce/Padouk Jumbo (with sound)

Post by Herman » Sat Oct 12, 2013 5:18 am

Did not post a new one for some time, but this shows my latest Jumbo.
Moonspruce German Spruce top
Padouk Back and sides
EI Rosewood fingerboard
Ebony bindings
Sitka spruce bracing
Nitro finish

I read about "moonspruce", and is would be a better tonewood because the tree is cut in a specific moment of the lunar circle. As a Beta-man I'm always sceptical, but via Ebay I bought two sets in Germany. See what it does. I glued the first top together in a too moist condition. When glued to the rims it "convexed" when the humidity dropped. Mmm, nice fruitbowl. Bad bad moonspruce!
The second went much better and is still on. With some ups and downs (as always) it is ready. Look and hear. I'm practicing on a piece of Martin Simpson, so next time I'll do a better piece (fingers crossed).

Herman, The guitar looks great> I like the Padouk with the very high contrast binding\purfling scheme. The guitar sound as well as a certain glow to it.

Nice job Herman. I like the mitered purfling around. I have yet to do that, seems scary to me.

Thank you guys.

Tim, The mitered purfling is nothing to be scared about. Just don't rout the bindingchannels above the endgraft not as deep. Leave the depth of the purfling (or a littlebit more) on. Then with a sharp chisel you make an angle to the purfings (Hm, "purflings" sounds like a kind of little people in Lord of the Rings).
Dry fit, and all will be good.
Frodo: "Yes, I see them Purflings coming!"

Beautiful as always Herman. Nice job playing the Still's tune too!
The black binding just sets off the padouk.
Good job you little Purfling.
