DIY Case

I need a good case for my 1867 Haynes and finding one that is anywhere near fitting properly is really tough, so I thought I may try my hand at making one. I have a pic of the original type, but it doesn't do much to protect the guitar.
I ran across this one Dana Bourgeois apparently has as an option or includes with his little parlor, I really couldn't find out...I'm sure it's beyond my price level.
Any idea what wood was used here and an educated guess as to how thick the sides are?
My wife does a lot of quilting and sewing so I can get the lining and all, kind of like the natural look...the original was black of course...here's a pic of both....thanks in advance.
